Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool for installing, storing, and managing marketing tags without modifying website code. It lets you track almost any user behavior or interaction on your website.

Examples include Google Analytics 4, Google Ads conversion scripts, Meta Pixel, and remarketing tags.

The GTM platform allows for debugging the codes, checking errors, and viewing which tags have been fired and which have not on a particular page.

GTM can track various key site events, such as conversion ratio, adding to cart, clicks on external links, etc. The custom event options allow tracking events like purchases on a partner e-commerce site.

Some of the other benefits are:

  1. Since all the marketing tags are added to the GTM, this allows for faster website load time.
  2. You can have up to 500 containers (clients) per GTM account, all for free.
  3. Testing tools to debug tags.
  4. User permissions of different levels – view only, edit, etc.
  5. GTM creates a log of every version. This allows us to view past changes.

Conclusion: Don’t add many analytics tracking codes directly on your website, as this slows it down. Instead, use GTM, which allows you to track each tag and manage the codes easily. Also, It is free!
